Rev. George Sims Named Director of Philanthropy at the Village at Orchard Ridge

November 18, 2011

ROCKVILLE, Md. – National Lutheran Communities & Services (NLCS) named Reverend George Sims as the Director of Philanthropy, focusing specifically on The Village at Orchard Ridge (TVOR), A National Lutheran Community, in Winchester, Va. In this position, Sims will oversee philanthropic activities related to annual giving, capital campaigns, and deferred gifts through wills, trusts or other financial instruments at TVOR. Another part of his portfolio will be working with the congregations of the Virginia Synod to enhance their ministry with seniors.

Sims most recently served as regional staff of the Foundation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and Executive Director of the Mission of the Office for Planned Giving for the Virginia Synod for the last 10 years. In addition, he was the pastor of Reformation Lutheran Church in New Market, Va. from 1988-2001. Sims also served in congregations in North and South Carolina from 1975-1988.

“We are so pleased to have Pastor Sims join us,” Kathryn Baerwald, National Lutheran Communities & Services’ Chief Philanthropy Officer said. “He brings with him not only a valued expertise in planned giving, but also a passion for our mission that will soon be visible in the Shenandoah Valley.”

For Sims, this transition is one that is taking place at a very exciting time.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of an organization that is deeply committed to serving others. For the past 121 years NLCS has sought to address the needs of seniors, particularly in light of changing economic times and circumstances,” Sims said. “The Village at Orchard Ridge will seek to mirror this rich legacy. It is a privilege to share this mission and to have a role in ministry to seniors.”

A native of South Carolina, Sims holds a bachelor’s degree from Newberry College in Newberry, S.C. and a Master of Divinity from Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbia, S.C. He is married to the Rev. Martha Miller Sims, who serves at Grace Lutheran Church in Winchester, Va.
